ECM: Old Economy to the Information Economy: Moving From One to the Other (CTGE 442B, CEUs: 1.4)

Quite a lot has been made of the transformation from the ‘Old Economy’ to the ‘Information Economy’. As businesses, processes and methodologies start hurtling inexorably towards this Information Economy, it is very fashionable to completely ignore the ‘Old Economy’ and focus exclusively on this new one. All economies were the ‘New Economy’ at one time, or the other- ever since our ancestors started gathering, hunting and plundering to feed their families in the caves.

Experiences from all of those economies can [and will] provide us with important lessons that can be used effectively in the Information Economy.  “ECM: Old Economy to the Information Economy: Moving from one to the other” is an advanced course for the ECM certificate program and will focus on the important lessons that can be gleaned from the Old Economies, and How those lessons can be applied effectively to leverage success in the information economy. Topics include:

  • Various stages in the development of trade and commerce

  • Forms of trade and commerce during each of these stages

  • Milestones in development and decline of the Old Economies

  • Lessons learned from each of these developments

  • Relevance of those lessons to today’s Information economy

  • Explore application of those lessons to challenges faced by managers

  • Develop a roadmap to meet those challenges

  • How can this help when the Information Economy inevitably joins the ranks of the Old Economy?

OBJECTIVE:

Stimulate creative thinking into how the lessons from past experience can be applied to meet the challenges we face today and those to come in the future.

ACTIVITIES:

Interactive discussion drawing both positive and negative examples from those in attendance. Class exercises both onsite and between classes followed by group presentations in class. Active use of on-line resources will provide tools that those in attendance can use well beyond the course. Case studies and group presentations with sufficient time for challenging and defending positions taken.

PREREQUISITES:

At least 3 years of business experience, significant access to the Web for both e-mail and surfing, desire to understand how E-commerce effects all aspects of companies, not just how to implement a tactical solution.
