Communicating for Effective Collaboration (CTGE 442G, CEUs: 0.7)

Both technical and non-technical professionals and managers are called upon to become increasingly skilled in collaborating effectively. The need to accomplish more, faster, often with fewer resources, has become a business imperative. There is less margin for error in communicating ideas, requirements, feedback, and changes. Every communication opportunity can either build your success or waste time, energy, and resources.

This program focuses on the specific behavioral skills of successful professionals and leaders for eliciting clarity, cooperation and support with direct reports, managers, vendors, customers, and team members. You will leave with actions you can take in current situations and a thorough understanding of how to foster collaboration in your organization. TOPICS INCLUDE:
  • Overview of skills for successful collaboration
  • Clarifying multiple needs and goals
  • Establishing and maintaining rapport with diverse individuals
  • Finding common ground on which to communicate and cooperate
  • Negotiating clearly understood agreements
  • Maintaining a climate that enhances collaboration
  • Facilitating remote (i.e. phone, electronic) communication
  • Practice and continuous learning strategies

OBJECTIVE:

The skills covered help you work more effectively with individual contributors as well as direct reports and members of disparate or self-supervised teams. The focus is on those skills and attitudes necessary to communicate competently and efficiently when there is intense pressure to perform at the highest levels.

ACTIVITIES:

The learning process will consist of lecture, demonstration, dialogue, and small group activities. There will be a homework assignment between Class 1 and Class 2 to enable the participants to practice skills covered in Class 1.

SUGGESTED READING MATERIALS:

  • Smart Work: The Syntax Guide for Mutual Understanding, by Lucy Freedman and Lisa Marshall.

  • The Magic of Rapport: How You Can Gain Personal Power in Any Situation, by Jerry Richardson
