Acquiring and Syndicating Content for Your E-Commerce Web Site (CTGE 442H, CEUs: 0.6)

It’s no longer enough to put up a flashy Web site -- the best technology in the world won’t sell products by itself. A key component to making a compelling customer experience is quality content: information that your customers are interested in. But where do you get good content and how do you use it? This course will provide practical, hands-on tools and techniques for acquiring and deploying business-enhancing content to your site. We will also examine the opportunities for syndicating / licensing your own site’s content to other Web sites. Topics include:
  • Syndication services and how to use them (iSyndicate, Screaming Media, etc.)
  • Technologies for aggregating free content (RSS, ICE)
  • Syndicating your own content to increase brand recognition and traffic
  • Content-sharing partnerships with other sites
  • Techniques for attracting contributing writers
  • Typical content licensing terms
  • How to build a content strategy that harmonizes with your commerce goals
  • Implementing syndicated content on your site
  • How to use content to lead customers to a relationship with your company

OBJECTIVE:

You will acquire an understanding of how to acquire content for your commerce sites by using syndication services, syndication technologies, and by contracting with other Web sites and with content producers.

ACTIVITIES:

You will identify appropriate content sources for a commerce site (your own or a sample site) and will construct a plan for implementing this content. You will also build a simple RSS file for syndicating content to other sites.

PREREQUISITES:

You should have a basic understanding of HTML, Web site design,  and e-commerce concepts.
