Mobile ECM (CTGE 442N, CEUs: 1.4)

The wireless internet is poised to lead and accelerate the information revolution unfolding today by freeing people from wired terminals and providing them with a pervasive "always-on communication and networking paradigm with far-reaching consequences for society. Proclaimed by analysts and witnessed in Europe and Japan, ubiquitous access is breaking down barriers and opening new markets and business processes to reach millions of users and companies beyond today's high-tech elite. Much like the Internet itself, this second wave is providing tremendous opportunities in rapidly unfolding markets for innovative companies and their partners who recognize and solve, early on, the needs of business and professionals through vision, leading technologies, and online services.

The stakes are high--the wireless Internet is growing fast and the time to enter is now. Device usage is going to grow exponentially over the next few years. Analysts estimate that smart phones are expected to have 48 million users worldwide by 2002 and 204 million by 2005. The potential revenue in this market is equally as great--U.S. consumers spent $7.3 billion on personal digital devices in 1999, ranging from digital cell phones and smart phones to PDAs and portable computers in MP3 players and digital cameras.

This course is intended for marketing, business development, and technical personnel responsible for the strategic direction and/or implementation of online advertising, e-commerce Web sites, or e-business solutions, who look at the wireless Internet as an opportunity to extend their customer reach and service. The course does not provide an in-depth technology view or teach WAP or other programming languages. Key course topics are

  • ECM and wireless convergence--what works, what doesn't, markets, portals, who's who.
  • Developing and deploying a wireless Internet strategy, integrating local content, advertising, and transactions.
  • Extending your reach--why wireless is so critical deals driving traffic, real-time promotions, transactions, tracking.
  • Business-to-business aspects of wireless, just-in-time e-markets, m-commerce (mobile commerce), e911 mandate\
  • Is there a positive ROI in sight? Outlook the wireless digital economy, what's next, implications.

The instructor's experience as an Internet/Wireless forerunner allows for the focus of the class on this exploding market to be from a business perspective, rather than a technical one. The instructor believes that organizations can and must, for competitive reasons, create an Internet commerce strategy that generates real value--where value can be measured as revenue, cost savings, customer loyalty, competitive advantage, and more.
