Successfully Managing an E-Commerce Project (CTGE 443B, CEUs: 0.6)

As more companies look to launch e-commerce projects, people possessing project management skills will be in high demand. This course will show you the key areas to consider in designing an e-commerce project and how to manage that project in detail to successful completion.

Course content includes assessing business requirements, evaluating technology, managing teams, monitoring risks, reporting success metrics, and mapping project timelines. Examine the key success factors in managing e-commerce projects and explore important issues to consider in the planning phases. After managing the project to its completion, you will know how to assess its success or failure in preparation for the next project. Topics include:

  • The role technology plays in an e-commerce project
  • The management goals necessary to implement e-commerce
  • Who should participate on the project team?
  • What things increase the chance for success?
  • How should usability be tested prior to rolling out the project?
  • How can progress be measured during and after the project?
  • What if an e-commerce project is too successful?
  • When should we walk away from a project failure?
  • The characteristics of a successful e-commerce project manager

Activities include instructor-led presentation, interactive discussion points and online examples of e-commerce case studies. The case study format will be enhanced by a short group project between class meetings where you will assess a particular e-commerce implementation and identify the project plan and management issues that were most critical. Discussion points will be used at intervals during the presentation to allow you to connect and explore e-commerce issues in greater depth. Reading materials: The Electronic Commerce Guide (online)

Special note: if you are a project manager with several years of experience, you can substitute this course with any other ECM program elective.

Prerequisite: How to Write an E-Commerce Project Plan (ctge 443A)
