NOTE:
Fall 2003 was the last semester of the
E-Commerce,
Public Policy and the Law (CTGE 443F,
CEUs: 0.7) | ||
![]() To succeed in this turbulent
environment, e-commerce leaders must be well informed about public policy
and the law. They need to be prepared to identify, formulate and negotiate a strategy
that is optimal for their enterprise, work with legal counsel, read and comment
on legislation and pending rules, work effectively with the media, activists,
and professional standards bodies, testify in hearings, lobby, build coalitions,
lead grassroots campaigns, and provide and give electoral support. This course will not give you
all the answers, but will introduce you to important frameworks, models, resources,
and practical steps you need to be informed and act responsibly in these areas
long after you leave class. Anticipated topics include: taxation, copyright, privacy,
the European Union’s privacy requirements, digital signatures, cyber squatting,
encryption, content decency, SPAM, cyber crime, metatag battles, criminal liability
of ISPs, confluence of international, federal and state jurisdiction over E-Commerce,
speech and trademark infringement. Of course, the topics are continually changing. NOTE: Approximately six hours of work outside of class will be required as self-directed teams research and prepare a class presentation on a public policy and law topic of interest to them. |
